Anxiety Therapy

Progressive Muscle Relaxation or Progressive Relaxation Training

Progressive Muscle Relaxation or PMR is an exercise that was developed by Dr. Edmund Jacobsen in the 1920’s. It is relaxation method that involves alternately tensing and relaxing different muscle groups of the body to promote both physical and mental relaxation. The technique is based on the principal that physical relaxation can lead to mental calmness. The process also allows individuals to become more aware of and learn about where they hold tension in their bodies, which improves their overall self-awareness and thus opens up new possibilities for consciously releasing stress and tension.  For a deeper walkthrough, see our Grief and Loss.

Attachment-Based Theory

Attachment-based theory refers to a psychological and developmental framework that explains how humans form emotional bonds– especially between children and caregivers– and how these early connections shape our behavior, emotional life and relationships.

Attachment research shows us the reciprocal influence that patients and therapist have on one-another. By providing the patient with a secure base we offer a “corrective emotional experience” that is a foundational part of healing from anxiety, depression and many of the mental or emotional symptoms characteristic of traditional mental health disorders.
